Exhibition – Zdenko Petrovski
YCC in the last 10 years is without a doubt the healthiest social tissue in the painful Macedonian reality. A fact to be served to politicians for breakfast every morning.
The ladies of the night in the area know best about this. It is the “church” to thousands of young and not so young “internal migrants” who have stayed in the labyrinths of their homeland in search for more meaning, feeding on the crumbs of culture that’s served.
Simply put, that space is Skopje’s micro utopia, an island of (un)fulfilled desires and needs of people with those special desires and needs, a reserve in which our society purifies the sediment from the degenerative order, therby producing movement. A movement towards the fun, inside the spiritual and vice versa. Scene.
Like all the exciting stories from the secret history of the previous two centuries, this one has the most precious witness, a camera master who will make a visual history for us and immortalize her for us and the world outside of YCC. And not just like a contribution for the collective memory, but more like a love letter for the next generations about how contemporary and authentic (sub)culture is built and maintained in a beautiful city in an unpleasant time. It matters.
Many people have photographed in YCC, professionally or just for fun, but not all have been a part of the process in the sense of being both an audience and essentially knowing the scene, her history and the people around it, to eat, drink and sleep music and to understand that miraculous and for many irrational, alchemical passion for her. To be “woven” into its reality. That perspective makes Zdenko Petrovski – ZdePe the one and only, a player always in the lead in front of others, with YCC as the privileged cultural environment. Experienced and with heart.
May it stay that way for a long time.
